Prenatal Massage FAQ

When should I start prenatal massages?

  • Prenatal massage is generally safe at any point during pregnancy.
  • We recommend starting in the second trimester (12-14 weeks) when the body has adjusted to pregnancy changes, and the risk of miscarriage decreases.

Are there any safety considerations before getting a prenatal massage?

Consult your primary care physician if you have any of the following conditions before scheduling a massage:

  • Severe nausea
  • Fever over 100°F (37.8°C)
  • Persistent abdominal pain
  • Sudden gush of fluid
  • Frequent burning urination
  • Unusual thirst with reduced urination and blurred vision
  • Spotting or bleeding
  • Malignancy or inflammation
  • Blood clotting issues
  • Risk of hemorrhage
  • Pre-eclampsia

What position will I be in during the massage?

We primarily use a side-lying position with professional pregnancy bolsters, which:

  • Provide optimal support and comfort.
  • Reduce pressure on the abdomen and lower back.
  • Support inguinal and round ligaments.

We avoid face-down positions, as they may:

  • Not adequately support the body during pregnancy.
  • Increase lumbar curve, potentially worsening back pain or sciatica.

How often should I receive prenatal massages?

First and Second Trimesters:

  • Once a month to manage stress and alleviate discomfort.

Third Trimester:

  • Every 2-3 weeks as the body experiences more tension and changes.

Closer to Due Date:

  • Weekly sessions to prepare for labor and reduce swelling.

Postpartum Massage FAQ

How soon after delivery can I receive a postpartum massage?

Vaginal Delivery:

  • You can start as soon as you feel ready.

Benefits include:

  • Restoring balance and alignment.
  • Promoting lymphatic drainage to eliminate medications from childbirth.
  • Soothing sore muscles and promoting relaxation.
  • Assisting in shrinking the uterus and reducing subcutaneous scar tissue.

C-Section Delivery:

  • It's generally recommended to wait 3-6 weeks after childbirth.
  • We use side-lying positions with supportive pillows to ensure comfort.

What is the difference between a 60-minute and 90-minute massage?

60-Minute Session:

  • Full-body massage focusing on relaxation and tension relief.

90-Minute Session:

  • Includes everything in the 60-minute session plus:
  • Abdominal massage to aid in uterine shrinkage and scar tissue breakdown.
  • High-frequency machine therapy for pain relief and reducing body swelling.

How often should I receive postpartum massages?

General Recommendation:

  • Once or twice a week for the first six months postpartum.

For Specific Conditions:

  • Continued treatment beyond six months for issues like sciatica, edema, or pain in the wrists, back, or neck.
  • Regular massages can significantly aid in recovery and improve overall well-being.
